After Math by Emily Barth Isler


 

This book is awesome. Lucy is a girl who family relocates after her little brother's death. What Lucy is not expecting is to end up in a school in a class with students who experienced a school shooting a few years ago, apparently they might have something loosely in common. But Lucy decides to keep her brother's death a secret until she befriends Avery who turns out to be the sister of the shooter. Can Lucy adapt to the school and this new challenging environment where everyone still seems to be healing? Might Lucy be just this school needs? 

This book does a great job of mixing emotion and a bit of humor. I loved it. Also, one last note, the teacher in the book is absolutely fantastic-love him. More teachers need to be like him!

Their knowledge is put to the test in Brian Buckmire's in-your-face real life drama when they are approached on the subway and questioned for a crime they did not commit. What happens during this interaction will forever change their lives. This book is powerful in all the right ways. It points out important perspectives and also points out some hard truths. I think some very important conversations can be had across all color lines and ages if a lot of people read this book. I think a lot of eyes will be opened if this book if widely read and spoken about! -TK

Gleanings by Neal Shusterman

Gleanings  is Neal Shusterman's most recent installment of The Arc of the Scythe series. This collection of short stories, written by a variety of authors, will take readers through a bunch of characters, both old and new, timelines, and settings as the mythology of this world (and world's beyond) is explored and delved more deeply into. Some of these imaginings are longer than others, but all will keep the reader turning the page! As a teacher, one idea that floated through my head was having my students creatively explore and attempt writing their own vision or installment to Shusterman's beautifully scary world-oh the possibilities! -TK
