The Boy Who Failed Show and Tell by Jordan Sonnenblick

 


This is a hilarious memoir of Jordan Sonnenblick. My students know that I have met and spoken with him on a regular basis. He is a wonderfully generous and caring man now, but this book chronicles his fourth grade school year as a regular kid who loved his snake, wanted to learn how to play drums, and hopefully survive a year in school. 

This had to have been really fun to write because it was a lot of fun to read! I think many students will be able to relate to the emotions (uncertainty, excitement, anger, and giddiness among others). Students tend to see the author's name on a book cover and forget that they once were students just like them. This book serves as a good reminder! I loved it!

  Come Home Safe tells a story all too familiar to many kids and adults across America. Oliva and her older brother Reed have always been taught the rules of how to interact with police should the occasion ever arise. Their parents' main goal has always been to know your rights and simply come home safe. Their knowledge is put to the test in Brian Buckmire's in-your-face real life drama when they are approached on the subway and questioned for a crime they did not commit. What happens during this interaction will forever change their lives. This book is powerful in all the right ways. It points out important perspectives and also points out some hard truths. I think some very important conversations can be had across all color lines and ages if a lot of people read this book. I think a lot of eyes will be opened if this book if widely read and spoken about! -TK

Gleanings by Neal Shusterman

Gleanings  is Neal Shusterman's most recent installment of The Arc of the Scythe series. This collection of short stories, written by a variety of authors, will take readers through a bunch of characters, both old and new, timelines, and settings as the mythology of this world (and world's beyond) is explored and delved more deeply into. Some of these imaginings are longer than others, but all will keep the reader turning the page! As a teacher, one idea that floated through my head was having my students creatively explore and attempt writing their own vision or installment to Shusterman's beautifully scary world-oh the possibilities! -TK
