Final Season by Tim Green

 

In Final Season, Tim Green basically recounts his final year of coaching his own son through a heavily influenced fictional story. Living with ALS, Tim Green is an inspiration to millions. This book is special because it is so real. 

Benjamin Redd is the next in line to be a star quarterback after his two older brothers who are now serving as assistant coaches under their head coach father. Everything seems set for a huge season, but the family and team's world is rocked when Ben's dad is diagnosed with ALS. While Ben's dad feels he needs to hide the real reason he shakes and his speech has become consistently slurred, it becomes increasingly obvious to everyone that something is seriously wrong. Ben's dad is determined to fight through ALS for his family and his team, wanting to teach them some final lessons as they try for the season championship. The only question left is: Will Ben's dad live long enough to see the end of the season?

Because this book is based on true events, I found myself near tears at times. I have read a bunch of Tim Green Books- they're all good- but this might be his greatest accomplishment. I highly recommend everyone find it and read it!

Gleanings by Neal Shusterman

Gleanings  is Neal Shusterman's most recent installment of The Arc of the Scythe series. This collection of short stories, written by a variety of authors, will take readers through a bunch of characters, both old and new, timelines, and settings as the mythology of this world (and world's beyond) is explored and delved more deeply into. Some of these imaginings are longer than others, but all will keep the reader turning the page! As a teacher, one idea that floated through my head was having my students creatively explore and attempt writing their own vision or installment to Shusterman's beautifully scary world-oh the possibilities! -TK

  Come Home Safe tells a story all too familiar to many kids and adults across America. Their knowledge is put to the test in Brian Buckmire's in-your-face real life drama when they are approached on the subway and questioned for a crime they did not commit. What happens during this interaction will forever change their lives. This book is powerful in all the right ways. It points out important perspectives and also points out some hard truths. I think some very important conversations can be had across all color lines and ages if a lot of people read this book.
