Surviving American History by Max Howard

 


Gabi couldn't know that on the day her mom moves her from home after a divorce he former classmates experience, dan die in a school shooting in the American History class she should have been sitting in. But that happens and she's left with the grief and the survivor's guilt. She should have been there, she might have been able to help, she could have stopped it.

But life goes on and it's a life she's not exactly thrilled with. Her mom's new boyfriend is a bore. Living in Maine-boring. But Gabi needs to find an escape from her thoughts and she just might have found it in a new classmate, Lennon. Can they escape the past together? 

Told in verse, this is a super quick read. Set for release in October, I highly recommend this one. Gritty read about survival and recovery!

Gleanings by Neal Shusterman

Gleanings  is Neal Shusterman's most recent installment of The Arc of the Scythe series. This collection of short stories, written by a variety of authors, will take readers through a bunch of characters, both old and new, timelines, and settings as the mythology of this world (and world's beyond) is explored and delved more deeply into. Some of these imaginings are longer than others, but all will keep the reader turning the page! As a teacher, one idea that floated through my head was having my students creatively explore and attempt writing their own vision or installment to Shusterman's beautifully scary world-oh the possibilities! -TK

I think some very important conversations can be had across all color lines and ages if a lot of people read this book.
