In Every Generation by Kendare Blake is a fun and exciting thriller set in the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" world. For my students who may be unaware of just who Buffy is, the "Vampire Slayer" title tells you all you really need to know. In this story, Frankie is a high schooler who is trying to survive just like anyone else-and she also is learning magic with her mom on the side. When something terrible happens at a Slayer convention and all the slayers have seemingly been eliminated, Frankie becomes the next Slayer, but the first Slayer-witch!

When the Hellmouth under the town threatening to open, and new threats pouring into the town, Frankie needs to quickly step up and figure out her role and the newest "Vampire Slayer"! 

You don't need to have seen the television shows or movie to really enjoy this story. Sure, that adds to the nostalgic enjoyment I got from reading this, but not a must. I've been a huge fan of Kendare Blake for a long time now and In Every Generation just gets added to the awesomeness that she creates each time she publishes!

Gleanings by Neal Shusterman

Gleanings  is Neal Shusterman's most recent installment of The Arc of the Scythe series. This collection of short stories, written by a variety of authors, will take readers through a bunch of characters, both old and new, timelines, and settings as the mythology of this world (and world's beyond) is explored and delved more deeply into. Some of these imaginings are longer than others, but all will keep the reader turning the page! As a teacher, one idea that floated through my head was having my students creatively explore and attempt writing their own vision or installment to Shusterman's beautifully scary world-oh the possibilities! -TK

Come Home Safe by Brian Buckmire

  Come Home Safe tells a story all too familiar to many kids and adults across America. Oliva and her older brother Reed have always been taught the rules of how to interact with police should the occasion ever arise. Their parents' main goal has always been to know your rights and simply come home safe. Their knowledge is put to the test in Brian Buckmire's in-your-face real life drama when they are approached on the subway and questioned for a crime they did not commit. What happens during this interaction will forever change their lives. This book is powerful in all the right ways. It points out important perspectives and also points out some hard truths. I think some very important conversations can be had across all color lines and ages if a lot of people read this book. I think a lot of eyes will be opened if this book if widely read and spoken about! -TK
